Finance Leaders Struggle to Turn AI Adoption Into Business Value

While 74% of finance executives have deployed AI to automate routine tasks, only 14% report that these investments are delivering genuine enterprise value. A new index from OneStream suggests that many organizations are scaling artificial intelligence faster than the data foundations required to support it.

The inaugural Forward Finance Index, which surveyed 1,300 CFOs across the U.S., U.K., and France, reveals a stark disconnect between technological ambition and operational reality. Although most finance teams have successfully integrated AI into reconciliation and reporting cycles, deep-seated issues with data transparency and workforce readiness remain. Currently, only 40% of financial leaders classify their reporting data as fully transparent, making it difficult to trace or validate the outputs generated by autonomous systems.

Robert Kugel, executive director at ISG Research, notes that the next competitive advantage lies in building environments where firms can safely grant AI more authority. Without a unified, explainable data architecture, scaling these tools often introduces significant enterprise risk. The research underscores that only 6% of finance organizations currently lead across all critical dimensions of AI maturity, including strategy, IT collaboration, and operational visibility. For the majority, fragmented roadmaps and poor data quality act as persistent barriers to achieving measurable return on investment.
