ANSI Report Identifies Implementation Hurdles for Hydrogen Scaling

While the technical foundation for hydrogen deployment exists, the path to large-scale adoption is currently obstructed by a disconnect between existing standards and those responsible for their practical application. A new report from the American National Standards Institute highlights that the primary challenge lies in workforce readiness and regulatory navigation.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) released its findings from a June 2026 workshop, concluding that the industry possesses a sufficient portfolio of safety and technical standards. However, the bottleneck persists at the implementation stage. Local officials, emergency responders, and inspectors frequently struggle with limited exposure to hydrogen-specific requirements, leading to inconsistency in permitting and project approval. To bridge this gap, participants urged for better training, clearer guidance, and a unified roadmap for infrastructure and storage.

Beyond training, stakeholders identified a critical need for centralized data sharing. Participants argued that performance and safety data should be accessible to inform future standards and validate emerging technologies, rather than remaining siloed within individual companies. The organization has also published the Hydrogen Standards Landscape, a catalog of over 500 published standards, which it intends to transition into an interactive online database. ANSI is now soliciting industry feedback to prioritize these implementation efforts, emphasizing that the focus must shift from creating new frameworks to helping existing systems function with greater reliability.
