Scientific Games Wins Communitas Award for German Recycling Partnership

A wooden pallet recycling project in Germany has earned Scientific Games a 2026 Communitas Award for Excellence in Corporate Responsibility. By diverting shipping materials from landfills to a social service workshop, the lottery company has combined environmental waste reduction with the creation of new employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

The initiative centers on a collaboration with the v. Bodelschwingh Foundations Bethel, one of Germany's largest social service providers. Scientific Games donates untreated wooden pallets, previously used to transport lottery scratchcards, to the foundation's Kracks Workshop. Participants then repurpose the timber into birdhouses and toys, which are sold through the organization's retail channels to fund ongoing social programs.

Andrew Jackson, VP of Corporate Responsibility at Scientific Games, described the project as a model for investing in locally led initiatives that produce measurable social and environmental impact. For the Bethel workshop, the steady supply of quality wood is particularly vital during periods of economic contraction when traditional charitable donations often decline. Jürgen Hoff, head of the Kracks Workshop, noted that the materials allow staff to expand their woodworking capabilities and develop professional skills through meaningful production. This accolade follows the company's previous successes at the Communitas Awards, where it was recognized in 2025 for its technology donation programs and STEAM mentorship initiatives.
