The technology, announced at the oneworld Innovation Summit in Lisbon, marks the first time an airline alliance has synchronized digital check-in across every member airline pairing. By using their preferred airline’s native application, travelers can now manage entire itineraries that involve multiple oneworld carriers without needing to interface with individual airline systems or airport check-in agents.
For an American Airlines passenger flying from Kuala Lumpur to Dallas-Fort Worth via Tokyo, the process begins with a single check-in through the American Airlines app. The system automatically issues branded boarding passes for both the Malaysia Airlines and American Airlines legs, which the passenger can save to their digital wallet. This bypasses the traditional requirement to visit a check-in desk, allowing travelers to proceed directly to security or bag-drop.
CEO Ole Orver stated that the alliance is prioritizing this layered technology to ensure that the ease of use passengers enjoy with their primary airline remains consistent throughout their entire journey. Future updates to the platform aim to incorporate dynamic, real-time boarding pass updates and expanded support for complex codeshare itineraries. Malaysia Airlines and American Airlines have already begun implementing these capabilities, with leadership from both carriers citing the reduction of travel friction as a primary objective for the rollout.
