American Military University Expands Curriculum With AI and Finance Tracks

The American Public University System is broadening its academic reach by introducing a specialized AI certificate, two finance degree programs, and six micro-credentials tailored for emergency services personnel. These additions aim to align institutional offerings with shifting labor market demands for military, federal, and public safety professionals.

Provost Dr. Elizabeth Joy Johnson stated that the expansion addresses the evolving needs of students seeking leadership roles. The new curriculum includes both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Finance, focusing on corporate investment, capital markets, and global financial management systems.

For those targeting the technology sector, the undergraduate AI certificate provides a foundation in generative artificial intelligence and large language models. The program emphasizes the practical application of these tools, alongside the necessary ethical and governance frameworks required for military and federal operations.

To support first responders, the system has launched six NanoCert programs covering emergency management communications, disaster fundamentals, and administrative leadership. These three-course credentials allow professionals to upskill rapidly and are designed to stack into existing bachelor’s degrees in emergency management and fire science. Currently, the institution serves nearly 90,000 active students and continues to offer the Everyday Heroes Grant, which provides a 20% tuition reduction for emergency services professionals and their families.
