The 36-month venture, boasting a total budget of 1.63 million euros, seeks to push hydrogen purity levels beyond 99.97%. By retrofitting established biogas infrastructure, the technology bypasses the need for the electricity-intensive electrolysis often required for green hydrogen production. The research consortium, which includes NCSR Demokritos, CERTH/CPERI, and producer BIOGAS LAGKADA, will investigate two distinct pathways: biomethane reforming and dark fermentation using cyanobacteria.
This initiative serves as a direct evolution of the earlier PUREHY pilot in Greece, which successfully demonstrated on-site hydrogen extraction at a smaller scale. For Metacon, the work validates its proprietary reforming and gas purification systems, positioning the company to offer a scalable solution for distributed renewable energy. Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon, emphasized that the project leverages existing feedstock assets to advance the company's broader system capabilities within the European hydrogen market. Funding is provided under the Competitiveness Programme, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and Greek national authorities.
