The incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when settlers arrived in Mukhmas to seize livestock. Residents intervened, but the situation deteriorated rapidly after the arrival of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). While the military claimed to employ only riot dispersal tactics against stone-throwing, local resident Raed Abu Ali stated that the soldiers' presence emboldened the settlers, who subsequently opened fire with live ammunition and struck victims with sticks. The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the death of Abu Siyam, alongside several others who sustained gunshot wounds.
This killing marks the second death of a Palestinian-American at the hands of settlers in under a year, contributing to a broader surge of violence that has claimed over 1,000 Palestinian lives in the region since 2023. Critics, including the veteran advocacy group Breaking the Silence, argue that the military’s role is not merely reactive but strategic. They contend that the army frequently blocks residents from rebuilding after attacks, effectively enforcing a policy of displacement. As the Israeli government accelerates settlement expansion, the death of Abu Siyam has intensified pressure on the US administration to address the funding and political support provided to the IDF, which remains the primary financial backer of these operations.
