Thomas W. Stiede, President of the council, emphasized that the decision hinges on the candidates' specific track records regarding labor rights. The federal incumbents receiving support have all pledged their backing to the Faster Labor Contracts Act, a measure union leadership describes as the most significant labor legislation since the New Deal. This legislative focus serves as the litmus test for the council, which represents over 100,000 workers across Chicago, Illinois, and Northwest Indiana.
The endorsed federal slate includes Juliana Stratton for the U.S. Senate, alongside a lengthy list of congressional candidates such as Jonathan Jackson, Delia Ramirez, and Lauren Underwood. Beyond federal contests, the council is directing its organizational influence toward the Illinois General Assembly, Cook and Will County offices, and the Chicago Board of Education. By aligning with this specific group, the union intends to address middle-class economic concerns through established political channels.
