Terrance Smith Honored for Leadership in Desert Ridge Community

Terrance Smith, executive director of the Desert Ridge Community Association, earned the City of Phoenix Excellence in Connectivity and Communication Award for his role in uniting one of Arizona’s largest master-planned neighborhoods. The recognition highlights his success in bridging gaps between 6,400 households, local businesses, and regional stakeholders.

Nominated by Phoenix District 2 Councilman Jim Waring, Smith received the honor during the 2026 Neighborhood Synergy Conference on Sept. 12. His tenure at Desert Ridge involves managing a sprawling 5,700-acre network that integrates residential zones with entertainment hubs and commercial partners. The award specifically acknowledges his multifaceted communication strategy, which utilizes digital engagement platforms, regular community meetings, and the quarterly Lifestyles magazine to keep the diverse population aligned.

Smith credits the achievement to the collaborative spirit of the board members and residents he serves. Shane Gillaspie, president of FirstService Residential Arizona, noted that Smith’s approach reflects the company’s core philosophy of building value through strong interpersonal relationships. The ceremony, hosted by the Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department, saw attendance from high-ranking city officials including Mayor Kate Gallego and Police Chief Matt Giordano, underscoring the importance of community cohesion in the city’s development strategy.
