The report, Beyond the Human Horizon, analyzed 43 million assets across 50 Fortune 1000 organizations, uncovering a shift in how digital infrastructure is compromised. While human attackers typically target shorter, higher-yield paths, AI agents can continuously navigate complex chains of low-severity vulnerabilities. These machine-viable paths often cross five or more security domains, making them difficult for standard tools—which usually operate in silos—to detect or intercept.
Most of these threats persist for over 30 days because they rely on minor configuration weaknesses that security teams often deprioritize. Vineet Edupuganti, CEO of Cogent, noted that for every path a human can realistically pursue, three more emerge that only make sense for machines. Because these agents operate in parallel across hundreds of instances, they effectively turn low-risk vulnerabilities into critical security failures that remain invisible to conventional defense strategies.
