DENSO Marks 40 Years in Battle Creek With $250,000 Housing Donation

DENSO Manufacturing Michigan marked four decades of operations in Battle Creek today with a $250,000 gift to the local housing fund. The contribution bolsters an initiative aimed at building or rehabilitating 1,000 homes by 2035, underscoring the company’s long-term integration into the regional workforce and community infrastructure.

Since production began on July 1, 1986, the Battle Creek site has evolved from a modest facility into the largest employer in Calhoun County. What started with approximately 200 staff members now spans 1.38 million square feet and employs over 2,000 people. The plant remains a critical node in DENSO’s North American manufacturing network, currently supplying advanced thermal technologies for the automotive sector.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga joined company executives for the anniversary event, which highlighted both historical achievements and recent capital investments. In 2023, the state supported a $63 million retooling project at the site, enabling the installation of new production lines dedicated to HVAC systems for electrified vehicles. DMMI President Shuichi Kamakura noted that the anniversary donation reflects a broader commitment to addressing local housing shortages, ensuring that the community supporting the plant's workforce remains viable for the next generation of manufacturing growth.
