FibroBiologics Patents Living Cell Factories for Peptide Delivery

Moving to replace the cycle of daily pills and weekly injections for metabolic treatment, Houston-based FibroBiologics has filed a patent for engineered cells that function as internal peptide factories. The technology aims to provide continuous, physiologic delivery of drugs like GLP-1 directly within the patient’s body.

The proposed platform utilizes three-dimensional structures known as spheroids or organoids, composed of engineered fibroblasts or other mammalian cells. Once administered, these cellular aggregates are designed to continuously produce and secrete therapeutic peptides, including GLP-1, GIP, and GLP-2. By maintaining steady levels of the medication, the company hopes to bypass the common issues of dose spikes and patient compliance associated with traditional delivery methods.

According to CEO Pete O'Heeron, the approach shifts the paradigm from external manufacturing to internal production. The patent application outlines a broad scope for the technology, extending beyond diabetes and weight loss to potential applications in oncology, inflammatory diseases, and tissue regeneration. To ensure safety and efficacy, the design includes immune-evasive modifications, biocompatible scaffolds, and inducible safety switches that allow clinicians to deactivate the cells if necessary. Hamid Khoja, the company's Chief Scientific Officer, noted that these living factories produce peptides in their native conformation, offering a closer physiological match than current synthetic alternatives.
