Hot Dogs and Safety: What Dogs Are Wearing This Halloween

Americans are set to spend nearly $1 billion on pet costumes this year, with the humble hot dog topping Google search trends for canine apparel. As pet parents prepare for the holiday, franchise leader Camp Bow Wow is pairing these popular trends with essential safety warnings for the October 31 festivities.

While the hot dog remains the most-searched costume, other favorites like chickens, sharks, and spiders follow closely behind. Wyoming currently leads the nation in costume-related searches, followed by New Hampshire and Utah. However, experts warn that festive attire should not compromise a pet's wellbeing. Holle Janzen, senior manager of training at Camp Bow Wow, emphasizes that comfort and visibility must remain the priority when selecting outfits.

To ensure a safe holiday, owners should avoid masks that obstruct vision and ensure costumes allow for normal movement and breathing. If heading out for trick-or-treating, reflective gear is recommended to maintain visibility after dark. Experts also caution against human-grade face paints or dyes, which can be toxic if ingested. Beyond costumes, the holiday brings specific household risks: chocolate and xylitol-laden candies must remain strictly out of reach, and front doors should be managed carefully to prevent pets from slipping out amid the constant flow of visitors.
