The tension between the two dates back to a chaotic 2023 appearance by Hanks on The Eric André Show, where the comedian later claimed the actor nearly injured crew members by riding a motorcycle on set. Hanks has consistently maintained that he was simply matching the show's unpredictable energy, even suggesting he outshined the host during the taping. In the lead-up to the convention meeting, André had publicly challenged Hanks to address these issues in person, going so far as to mock his lineage.
At the Los Angeles event, Hanks approached André from behind, prompting an immediate response from four security guards who formed a barrier between the pair. While Hanks later claimed the interaction allowed him to confront André about his past criticisms—including remarks regarding a controversial Jamaican accent—the comedian remained dismissive. As security escorted him away from the scene, André looked back and shouted, "Call Tom Hanks!" Hanks, appearing satisfied with the exchange, told his companions that the confrontation had been a long time coming.
