The incident occurred during a pilot program where Evri and Refined Robotics are testing bipedal bots designed to haul 15kg parcels across complex urban landscapes. While critics on social media suggested that a quadruped design would offer superior stability, Hafner dismissed the comparison as a misunderstanding of the physics involved. He explained that Barnsley’s specific topography caused the robot to lean consistently to one side, which triggered an overheating shutdown in the left knee motor.
Refined Robotics claims to have already resolved the mechanical fault through updated optimization cost functions and new software watchdogs. The team is currently scaling up operations, reporting that the robot successfully navigated a four-kilometer route without further issues. The Barnsley trial remains a critical data source for the company, providing real-world performance metrics that simulations and previous deployments in Tokyo failed to capture.
