The facility aims to alleviate capacity constraints currently facing acute care hospitals in the Bangor area. Patients at the new center undergo a rigorous recovery schedule, requiring a minimum of three hours of intensive therapy—spanning physical, occupational, and speech disciplines—five days each week. The hospital integrates 24-hour nursing care with frequent physician oversight to manage patients recovering from amputations, spinal cord injuries, and brain trauma.
Mat Gooch, president of Encompass Health’s Northeast region, described the launch as a bridge for the local healthcare community. Beyond standard clinical wards, the hospital features an activities of daily living suite designed to simulate real-world environments, alongside an in-house dialysis unit and an outdoor therapy courtyard. This project represents the company’s first wholly owned asset in Maine, distinguishing it from their existing joint venture, the New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland.
