The relocation marks a significant milestone in the utility's nearly 160-year history, moving its operations within the downtown district to support the area's ongoing economic revitalization. SoCalGas, a subsidiary of Sempra, has maintained a consistent footprint in the city center since its inception as the Los Angeles Gas Company in 1867, when it first powered gas lamps along Main Street.
Local officials and business leaders, including Assemblymember Mark González and Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Maria S. Salinas, praised the company for its commitment to retaining hundreds of jobs in the central business district. The new office environment at 2CAL is intended to provide a modern workspace for staff serving the utility's 21 million customers across Southern and Central California. CIM Group, which manages the property, cited the move as a boost to the downtown commercial ecosystem, noting that the utility remains a critical partner for regional infrastructure and economic stability.
