Spirit of Children Targets $20 Million to Soften Hospital Stays

For young patients confined to pediatric wards, the simple act of putting on a costume can temporarily replace clinical anxiety with the wonder of childhood. As Spirit of Children marks its 20th anniversary, the organization has launched its most ambitious campaign to date, aiming to raise $20 million by November.

Since its inception in 2006, the initiative has evolved from modest local parties into a network supporting 167 hospitals across North America. The funding drive, culminating in a celebratory week from October 12–16, 2026, focuses on more than just seasonal festivities. Every dollar collected at Spirit Halloween locations and online remains within the local community to finance Child Life programs, which provide essential emotional support, medical play therapy, and sensory resources for families navigating long-term care.

Steven Silverstein, CEO of Spirit Halloween and founder of the program, notes that the milestone reflects a long-term commitment to humanizing the medical experience. To date, the project has funneled over $164 million into hospital departments, enabling staff to offer everything from pet therapy to bereavement support. By providing these resources, the program helps ensure that pediatric patients have access to normalcy and creative outlets throughout the entire year, rather than just during the Halloween season.
