Two-Thirds of U.S. Drivers Cannot Afford a $500 Car Repair

Two-Thirds of U.S. Drivers Cannot Afford a $500 Car Repair

Two-thirds of American drivers would be unable to cover an unexpected $500 vehicle repair, a financial threshold that is forcing households to delay critical maintenance. The Midas Consumer Pulse Survey reveals that for many, personal mobility is becoming a source of extreme economic hardship rather than a routine necessity.

The financial strain is shifting how Americans interact with auto shops, with 51% of surveyed drivers reporting moderate to extreme pressure regarding vehicle upkeep. Among those earning $50,000 to $75,000 annually, only 19% feel capable of handling a surprise repair without significant stress. Millennial drivers, specifically those aged 35 to 44, appear the most vulnerable, with 71% indicating they would struggle to pay for an emergency fix.

As household budgets tighten, maintenance is frequently the first expense to be cut. Over half of the drivers polled have skipped or delayed recommended services in the past year, with oil changes, tire replacements, and air conditioning repairs cited as the most common casualties. Many are turning to digital resources to attempt self-repairs, with 33% of drivers searching online for tutorials before considering a professional mechanic.

Despite the push for cost-cutting, trust remains the primary factor in selecting a repair shop, outweighing even the lowest price. Drivers prioritize recommendations from friends and family, seeking transparency and flexible payment plans to manage the costs. According to Paul Elliott, VP of Marketing at Midas, the data reflects a broader reality where vehicle ownership is no longer a luxury but a fundamental requirement for employment and family obligations, leading many to make difficult trade-offs just to remain on the road.
