Alabama’s Unlikely Winter Hub: The 45-Year Legacy of Lost Luggage

Snow rarely touches the ground in Scottsboro, Alabama, yet thousands of winter sports enthusiasts are preparing to descend on the small town. On November 7, the retailer Unclaimed Baggage will host its 45th annual ski sale, unloading a record-breaking inventory of gear recovered from the world’s lost airline luggage.

Since 1981, this peculiar retail event has evolved from a niche curiosity into a national draw. The store spends the year stockpiling winter merchandise, resulting in a selection that spans 50,000 square feet and features high-end brands like Patagonia, Arc'teryx, and Moncler. Owner Bryan Owens describes the sale as a community cornerstone, noting that inventory will be released in waves throughout the day to manage the expected crowds, with additional sales space staged under outdoor tents.

The event has spawned a dedicated subculture of shoppers who camp out overnight to secure a position in the queue. To reward the most committed bargain hunters, the first 45 people in line receive a 45-minute early shopping window, a commemorative t-shirt, and a $45 gift card. The store facilitates the overnight campout with fire pits, pizza, and movies. To mark the 45th anniversary, the retailer is also raffling off a 2026-27 Epic Pass, offering the winner unlimited access to 42 Vail Resorts locations, including Whistler Blackcomb and Park City.
