ASE Certified Master Technician Ken Lichty notes that drivers frequently gamble with their safety, assuming a vehicle is fit for travel as long as the wheels are turning. This logic frequently backfires, leading to permanent engine damage or loss of vehicle control. To mitigate these risks, technicians identify seven critical scenarios where professional transport is mandatory: an overheating engine, failing brakes, sudden loss of power, active fluid leaks, compromised tires, visible smoke or burning odors, and any vehicle that has sustained collision damage.
Beyond these specific mechanical failures, any situation that impairs a driver's ability to steer or stop safely warrants an immediate stop. If a vehicle exhibits these symptoms, the recommended procedure involves pulling into a secure location, activating hazard lights, and remaining clear of active traffic while waiting for assistance. By removing the financial barrier to professional help through the end of the month, the company hopes to encourage motorists to prioritize vehicle health over the convenience of reaching a shop under their own power.
