SAS and Kay Yow Cancer Fund partner to target cancer care access

With nearly 42 women reached for every $1,000 invested, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund is leveraging advanced analytics to bridge gaps in oncology care. By mapping demographic data against existing outreach programs, the organization aims to direct future funding toward the communities with the most urgent, unmet medical needs.

The collaboration utilizes the SAS Viya platform to synthesize the Fund's internal grant data with public health statistics from the CDC, the National Cancer Institute, and the U.S. Census Bureau. This analytical approach creates a comprehensive geographic map of cancer incidence and healthcare access, allowing the non-profit to pinpoint exactly where its EmPOWERment Tours and educational initiatives can yield the highest impact.

Initial performance metrics validate the strategy. Recent data shows that $475,000 in grant funding successfully supported 12 cancer centers, facilitated 4,100 screenings, and provided patient navigation services to 1,200 women. Selena Mua, program manager for the AI + Society team at SAS, noted that the project transforms raw information into actionable outreach, ensuring resources reach underserved populations more efficiently. CEO Jenny Palmateer emphasized that these insights allow the Fund to make data-driven decisions in a clinical landscape where time and accessibility are critical for patient outcomes.
