Piramal Pharma Expands Kentucky Facility with New Microbiology Lab

Piramal Pharma Solutions has opened a high-tech microbiology laboratory at its Lexington, Kentucky site, marking a key milestone in an $85 million expansion. The facility, which began GMP operations in September, is designed to slash testing times by half and double sterility testing capacity for complex injectable drugs.

The new laboratory more than triples the site's previous testing space, integrating three advanced biosafety cabinets and a centralized incubator system to streamline workflows. A centerpiece of the facility is a Grade A sterility testing isolator housed within a Grade C environment, a significant technical upgrade from the site's previous non-classified areas. This setup enables concurrent processing of multiple samples using both open and closed filtration methods, directly addressing the needs of clients moving from clinical trials to commercial-scale production.

Beyond capacity, the design prioritizes product integrity. Built-in pass-throughs now allow for the direct transfer of samples from the manufacturing floor to the lab, cutting contamination risks. According to Nathan Richardson, VP and Site Head, these enhancements provide the reliable, responsive infrastructure necessary to support diverse modalities, including small molecules and peptides. While this laboratory is now online, the broader Lexington expansion—which includes commercial-scale fill/finish capabilities—remains on track for completion in late 2027.
