Star Trek and JPL Launch Joint Celebration for Milestone Anniversaries

As Star Trek marks six decades since its television premiere and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory celebrates ninety years of space exploration, the two icons are joining forces for a collaborative project. This partnership highlights the historic, reciprocal influence between Gene Roddenberry’s vision and real-world planetary research.

The centerpiece of this commemoration is a new interview series titled "Those Who Look Up." The production features a cyclical format where four experts from the Caltech-managed JPL and four actors from the Star Trek franchise interview one another in a continuous chain. This structure aims to illustrate how science fiction and scientific reality have fueled each other’s progress for generations. The project reflects a deep-rooted history, dating back to Gene Roddenberry’s frequent consultations with JPL engineers to lend authenticity to his spacefaring future.

This exchange has often been bidirectional. In the 1970s, project manager John Casani provided a physical model of the Voyager probe to Roddenberry, which directly inspired the sentient antagonist V'Ger in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." Conversely, numerous scientists now working at JPL credit the television series as the primary catalyst for their career paths in aerospace. Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, Jr., CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, noted that witnessing this mutual inspiration firsthand remains a rewarding testament to his father’s legacy. The initiative serves as both a retrospective of past achievements and an exploration of how science and narrative continue to shape global aspirations.
