Nolla Health Launches Nation’s First AI-Prescribed Acne Treatment in Utah

Utah residents now have access to the nation’s first AI-authorized medical prescription service, as Nolla Health launches its Nolla Derm app to address a severe dermatology access gap. The pilot program allows users to receive acne treatment plans within minutes, bypassing the typical two-month wait for a specialist visit.

In Utah, roughly 100,000 people struggle with active acne, yet only 10% manage to see a dermatologist. With an average wait time of 61 days and 11 counties entirely lacking specialized care, the state serves as a testing ground for Nolla Health’s regulatory-approved system. The platform operates under strict, physician-approved protocols, utilizing a 15-minute intake process and facial scans to generate treatment plans starting at $4.99 per month. If the AI cannot confidently determine a course of action, it immediately redirects the patient to a licensed physician.

Safety remains the core of the rollout, which involves three distinct stages of oversight. Initially, every prescription requires manual physician approval. As the program progresses, oversight shifts to daily and then weekly retroactive physician audits. According to Nolla Health CEO Luis Wenus, the goal is not to replace specialists but to handle routine cases, freeing dermatologists to focus on high-risk patients, such as those with potential skin cancer. The system’s clinical performance has shown high reliability, with licensed clinicians agreeing with AI recommendations in over 96% of cases during testing. For patients, the program offers a pathway to care that avoids permanent scarring often caused by long wait times.
