The funding supports the National Urban League's Affiliate Movement, targeting programs in eight cities, including Chicago, Philadelphia, and Saint Louis. These initiatives focus on equipping both youth and adults with the technical skills and professional training necessary to navigate a competitive labor market. Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, noted that the partnership remains vital for long-term economic empowerment and community stability.
Carrie Williams, President of the American Water Charitable Foundation, stated that the investment aligns with the organization's broader mission to expand access to career readiness and mentorship. This grant is distributed through the foundation's Keep Communities Flowing program, which prioritizes social and economic investments alongside the utility’s core water services. Since 2012, the foundation has directed over $25 million toward community-focused projects, funded entirely by American Water shareholders rather than customer rates.
