Avila Beach Transforms into Coastal Arena for Annual Rodeo

Thousands of spectators descended on the California coastline from September 24 to 26 for the sixth annual Beach BreakaWave, a high-stakes rodeo fundraiser. Held just feet from the Pacific Ocean, the event blended traditional Western competition with coastal flair to support the Cal Poly Rodeo program’s student athletes.

The competition drew talent from across the West, Hawaii, and Canada, featuring marquee events like men’s saddle bronc riding and the rapidly expanding sport of women’s breakaway roping. Friday and Saturday evening sessions saw 2,500 seats sell out, while a Thursday night qualifier added another 1,000 fans to the crowd. Beyond traditional roping, the event showcased surf joring and junior lifeguard demonstrations, cementing the unique "Coastal Cowboy" identity of the gathering.

Athletes such as Taylor Munsell, Mitch Polluck, Lari Dee Guy, and Reed Neely claimed top honors across the multi-day event. For Cal Poly students, the rodeo serves as a practical application of the university’s "Learn by Doing" philosophy. More than 200 students managed everything from arena construction and logistics to marketing and VIP hospitality. According to Cal Poly Rodeo head coach Ben Londo, the event functions as a critical revenue stream, providing scholarships for over 25% of the team members. With the support of local agencies and the Port San Luis Harbor District, the organizers have already committed to returning to Avila Beach in September 2027.
