The Hearing Experience Index, released to coincide with National Audiology Awareness Month, highlights a widespread disconnect between public infrastructure and the needs of aging populations. While 52% of seniors report struggling to engage in meaningful moments, that figure climbs to 98% among those who personally manage hearing loss. The data suggests that the issue extends beyond medical concerns, impacting emotional well-being and social confidence.
According to the findings, 79% of individuals with hearing challenges have struggled to follow conversations with family or friends, while many others report missing critical travel announcements or medical information. The frustration is compounded by public environments that remain largely inaccessible; 73% of seniors believe current public spaces are not designed with hearing health in mind. Despite the availability of assistive technologies, 84% of respondents have never utilized tools or accommodations to improve their ability to hear in public settings, signaling a significant gap in both awareness and accessibility.
