The pilot scheme will initially launch in Canary Wharf, Milton Keynes, Leeds, Stockton-on-Tees, and Nottingham. Deliveroo, now a subsidiary of the US giant DoorDash following a £2.9 billion acquisition, expects the autonomous units to assist in maintaining its promise of 30-minute delivery windows for its three-sided marketplace of restaurants, grocers, and retailers.
This shift reflects a growing trend in the UK retail sector toward ground-based robotics. Rival firm Just Eat previously initiated a similar pilot program earlier this year, partnering with Starship Technologies to test self-driving units in North East Barnsley. As competition in the on-demand space intensifies, these automated solutions are increasingly viewed as a necessary tool to manage capacity and operational costs.
