Walmart recruits Uber veteran Albert Greenberg to lead infrastructure

Walmart has tapped former Uber executive Albert Greenberg to serve as Vice President of Infrastructure as a Service. The appointment marks a strategic shift for the retail giant as it looks to modernize its global cloud, data center, and store-level systems to support growing AI and omnichannel demands.

Greenberg joins the retail behemoth following a five-year tenure at Uber, where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Architect Officer. During his time there, he oversaw significant upgrades to the company's technical architecture, focusing on security and operational efficiency. His new mandate at Walmart involves managing the core infrastructure that powers everything from fulfillment centers to customer-facing digital services.

In a statement regarding the move, Greenberg highlighted the bridge between technical operations and the consumer experience. He noted that the increasing influence of artificial intelligence necessitates a more robust and adaptive backend. By integrating public and private cloud environments with in-store systems, he aims to streamline the technology stack that allows Walmart to maintain its supply chain and associate workflows.
