Delaware Secures $950 Million Commitment for Childhood Health

A landmark legal and philanthropic agreement will direct $950 million toward pediatric well-being in Delaware over the next 11 years. The deal, finalized between the Alfred I. duPont Charitable Trust, the State of Delaware, and The Nemours Foundation, establishes a dedicated fund to sustain nonprofit health initiatives across the state.

The newly formed Alfred I. duPont Charitable Fund for Delaware's Children aims to cement the legacy of industrialist Alfred I. duPont, whose 1935 estate established the Trust. Under the terms of the agreement, at least $237.5 million of the total commitment is earmarked specifically for Nemours’ local initiatives, ensuring the health system maintains its long-standing connection to its Delaware roots. Governance of the fund will be managed by a committee featuring three directors from the Trust and one appointee from the Governor of Delaware.

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings described the resolution as a watershed moment, noting that her office has spent decades navigating the complexities of the duPont estate to reach this point. For Nemours Children's Health, the funding provides a foundation to expand its pediatric services, which currently include a network of hospitals and primary care practices. Dr. R. Lawrence Moss, president and CEO of Nemours, stated that the collaboration honors the founder’s vision while creating a sustainable model for future generations of children in the region.
