Walmart and OpenAI launch AI-powered virtual fashion try-on

Shoppers can now visualize clothing on themselves using only a selfie and a screenshot, as Walmart joins OpenAI’s latest expansion of ChatGPT’s retail capabilities. The integration allows users to generate virtual try-ons for specific apparel, save their favorite looks to a library, and transition directly to merchant websites for purchase.

The new features leverage OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.5 technology, enabling a seamless path from inspiration to potential purchase. By uploading a photograph alongside a product image—such as a screenshot of a dress spotted on social media—users can generate a visual representation of how the item might look on them. Daniel Danker, EVP of AI Acceleration, Product, and Design at Walmart, confirmed that the retailer has collaborated with OpenAI from the project's inception to ensure its fashion catalog is fully integrated into the experience.

Beyond immediate visualization, the new Favorites tool allows shoppers to organize discovered items into folders within the ChatGPT interface for later consideration. While the tool simplifies the search process, OpenAI notes that generated imagery is illustrative rather than a precise guarantee of fit or sizing. This initiative deepens a strategic partnership between the two companies, building upon previous efforts to integrate instant checkout solutions directly into the chatbot environment.
