CIP Commits EUR 270 Million to Scottish Battery Storage Project

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has finalized a final investment decision for Kilmarnock South, a 350 MW battery storage facility in southern Scotland. With construction now underway, the project represents a EUR 270 million commitment aimed at capturing surplus wind power and stabilizing the national grid by 2028.

The Kilmarnock South site in south Ayrshire will feature a four-hour duration lithium-ion system, marking the longest-duration asset within the firm's UK portfolio. Developed by Noriker Power, which retains oversight of the construction phase, the facility is designed to store excess Scottish wind energy that would otherwise be curtailed. Shell Energy Europe Ltd has secured an optimization agreement for the site, ensuring long-term revenue as the project prepares for a commercial launch in the first quarter of 2028.

This project expands CIP's Scottish footprint to four transmission-connected sites, including Coalburn 1, Coalburn 2, and Devilla. Once fully operational, these installations will provide a combined 1.85 GW of power capacity and 4.4 GWh of storage—a volume equivalent to roughly one-third of Great Britain’s current total operational battery capacity. UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks noted that the initiative is essential for reducing energy waste and lowering consumer costs by utilizing infrastructure to manage renewable supply more effectively.
