Billy Joel Updates Fans on Recovery Following Brain Surgery

“I know people are worried about me because they read that I have a brain disorder, which sounds a lot worse than it actually is,” Billy Joel told listeners this week. The 77-year-old singer addressed his ongoing recovery from normal pressure hydrocephalus during a candid appearance on his SiriusXM channel.

While Joel reported improvements in his memory and overall functioning following the implantation of a shunt to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid, he admitted that his physical stability remains a challenge. He described his lingering balance issues as feeling “like being on a boat,” a sensation that previously compromised his ability to walk steadily. In addition to these symptoms, the singer noted a slight decline in his hearing, which he attributed to decades of high-volume stage performances rather than the neurological condition itself.

The decision to step away from the spotlight came after medical professionals issued a stark warning regarding his concert schedule. Doctors cautioned that the physical strain of performing was effectively causing repeated trauma, comparing the impact to sustaining a concussion during every show. Joel explained that the risk of losing further brain cells prompted him to prioritize his rehabilitation. Currently, the Piano Man is focused on physical therapy and following his medical team’s strict guidance to avoid stress, with no immediate timeline set for a return to live touring.
