In a letter addressed to Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the group—comprised of 19 Democrats and Senator Bernie Sanders—argued that current allocations are insufficient to protect vulnerable populations. They contend that record-high energy prices, fueled by the conflict initiated in February, place senior citizens, low-income families, and individuals with disabilities at risk of exposure during the winter months.
Financial projections from the National Energy Assistance Directors Association support these concerns, estimating that households will face an additional $900 burden for heating oil this season, representing a 50% increase over the previous year. The lawmakers warned that without an immediate boost to the existing $4 billion budget, state programs will inevitably be forced to restrict benefits or exhaust resources prematurely. Describing the situation as a matter of life and death, the senators urged the administration to prioritize this appropriation to prevent a humanitarian crisis for families unable to absorb the rising costs of basic home heating.
