Verana Health Unveils AI and Data Tools for Ophthalmology Research

Ahead of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s annual meeting in New Orleans, Verana Health has debuted a suite of artificial intelligence agents and expanded data sets. The San Francisco-based firm, which manages the massive IRIS Registry, aims to accelerate clinical trial enrollment and refine treatment strategies through real-world insights.

The company’s latest push centers on integrating clinical data with advanced software to streamline research workflows. A primary addition is the collaboration with Bitfount, which combines ophthalmic imaging with electronic health records. By using AI to analyze OCT and fundus scans, the platform generates eligibility flags, allowing researchers to identify trial candidates more efficiently through a pre-validated pipeline.

Verana is also expanding its Qdata collection, adding specialized modules for Retinal Vein Occlusion and Stargardt Disease. Complementing this, the company introduced Agent Claire, an AI tool designed for life science teams. It allows users to query complex patient datasets—such as those for diabetic retinopathy or nAMD—using conversational language rather than specialized programming. This shift is intended to democratize data access for commercial and medical planning teams.

Beyond software, the firm is scaling its imaging initiative by expanding the Imaging Consortium to include community-based practices, moving beyond its initial focus on academic medical centers. These updates will be showcased during AAO 2026, where Verana plans to present research on Thyroid Eye Disease and demonstrate how AI-driven automation can assist clinicians in managing MIPS requirements.
