HelpMeSee Appoints Former FlightSafety Executive Doug May as CEO

Doug May has taken the helm as president and CEO of HelpMeSee, the non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating cataract blindness through aviation-inspired surgical training. Stepping into the role on September 16, 2026, May transitions from his position as chief operating officer to lead the group’s global expansion of simulation-based medical instruction.

The organization’s mission centers on Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery, a cost-effective procedure that restores sight to patients worldwide. Drawing on his background as an experimental test pilot and his tenure at FlightSafety International, May aims to apply the rigorous standards of aviation training to medical education. His career includes leadership roles at Bell Helicopter, Textron Aviation, and Bombardier, where he specialized in immersive technology and large-scale operational management.

HelpMeSee utilizes high-fidelity virtual reality simulators and haptic technology to allow surgeons to practice procedures repeatedly before entering the operating room. This competency-based curriculum, which requires extensive eLearning and objective performance assessments, is designed to accelerate skill acquisition compared to traditional apprenticeships. With over 40 simulators and 19 training centers globally, the non-profit continues to partner with governments and universities to build local surgical capacity and address the needs of an estimated 100 million people suffering from cataract-related visual impairment.
