Dr. Joe Mitchell Takes the Helm at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

After a transition period spanning eighteen months, Joseph Mitchell has officially stepped into the role of President and CEO at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He succeeds Madeline Bell, who concluded a forty-year tenure at the institution, including an eleven-year stint leading the nation’s oldest pediatric hospital.

Mitchell brings over two decades of experience in pediatric healthcare and organizational strategy to the position. Before joining CHOP as President in April 2025, he served as Executive Vice President at Boston Children's Hospital and led Franciscan Children’s, where he oversaw the planning for a major facility expansion slated for completion in 2029. His background also includes fourteen years at McKinsey & Company, where he spent seven years as a Partner focusing on healthcare transformation.

Since his arrival at the Philadelphia institution, Mitchell has focused on strengthening regional partnerships and refining organizational strategy alongside clinical and research staff. A urologist by training, he completed his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Under his guidance, the hospital aims to continue its focus on pediatric research, expanded access to care, and the integration of new clinical models.
