September Retail Tech: AI Triage and Digital Storefronts

September marked a decisive shift for major retailers as they moved beyond experimental pilots into large-scale AI integration. From Tesco’s virtual try-on trials in Sandhurst to Kingfisher’s aggressive push into predictive personalization, the industry is betting its bottom line on data-driven automation to solve persistent operational inefficiencies.

Kingfisher Group is leading the charge, having raised its pre-tax profit guidance to as much as £635 million, bolstered by a 16% jump in sales directly attributed to AI-driven personalization. This momentum is mirrored at Morrisons, which appointed former Kingfisher executive Dr. Mohsen Ghasempour as its first Chief AI Officer to centralize data science operations. Meanwhile, Primark has finally signaled its intent to launch a home delivery service in Britain, marking a significant strategic pivot for the retailer as it prepares for a corporate split from Associated British Foods.

The adoption of physical-digital hybrids continues to accelerate. Tesco has deployed AIUTA virtual try-on technology for its F&F clothing line, while The Entertainer has tapped THG Commerce to overhaul its digital customer journey using generative AI search capabilities. In the grocery sector, Waitrose has extended its partnership with Trust Retail through 2031 to digitize inventory management across its entire estate, and The Range is rolling out VoCoVo communication headsets across all 283 locations. On the global stage, Chinese retailer Rainbow launched its first 'Store Digital Twin' in Shenzhen, utilizing 17,000 IoT devices to synchronize real-time store performance with operational decision-making.
