Two Decades of Peer-to-Peer Teaching: TPT Marks 20th Anniversary

The platform began with a public school teacher’s observation that instruction improves when educators trade ideas. That premise transformed TPT into the world’s largest PreK–12 marketplace, now used by over 85% of U.S. teachers. Paul Mishkin, CEO of IXL Learning—which acquired TPT in 2023—notes that the site’s success stems from the reality that no one understands classroom needs better than those standing at the front of the room.

Beyond providing materials, the site has become an economic engine for 10,000 Teacher-Authors who have earned over $10,000 each. For many, these earnings have provided life-changing stability, from funding college tuition to securing early retirement. The exchange has also evolved to meet shifting educational demands, providing critical support during the 2020 remote learning pivot and the current surge in social-emotional learning needs.

As the industry faces the integration of artificial intelligence, TPT is positioning itself as a filter for quality. Survey data indicates that while 83% of educators have experimented with AI, most remain wary of unvetted content. In response, the platform has deployed tools to identify and remove low-effort, automated materials, ensuring that the community’s collective wisdom remains the primary standard for classroom resources.
