TVA Secures First U.S. Permit for BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor

While no specific construction timeline has been confirmed, the permit represents only the second advanced reactor authorization issued in the nation. The project positions the Clinch River site as a hub for next-generation nuclear energy, utilizing GE Vernova Hitachi technology designed to generate 300 megawatts of electricity. The modular design of these reactors allows for factory-built components, a process intended to reduce the complexity and duration of on-site construction compared to traditional nuclear facilities.

Mike Skaggs, TVA Interim President and CEO, described the permit as a foundational development for American nuclear capacity. The utility is currently negotiating with industry partners to distribute the financial burden of this first-of-a-kind deployment, aiming to protect regional ratepayers from the costs associated with new technology development. Federal and state officials, including Governor Bill Lee and Senator Marsha Blackburn, have lauded the move as a significant step toward regional energy independence and long-term grid reliability. The NRC’s approval is also expected to provide a streamlined regulatory pathway for future SMR projects across the United States.
