Piedmont Healthcare Expands Residency Training to Combat Georgia Shortage

The expansion includes an Internal Medicine residency and a Vascular Surgery fellowship at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, alongside a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine program based at Piedmont Athens Regional. These initiatives represent a shift toward systemwide graduate medical education, with recruitment now underway for the initial cohorts. By grounding clinical training in local hospitals, the health system intends to mitigate the national physician shortage, leveraging data that suggests doctors typically establish practices in the regions where they complete their residencies.

Kevin Brown, President and CEO of Piedmont Healthcare, described the accreditation as a vital investment in regional medical infrastructure. Dr. Karen Law, the system’s Chief of GME, emphasized that these programs leverage existing clinical expertise to prepare future practitioners for high-demand specialties. Looking ahead, the organization plans to scale its training capacity to support hundreds of residents and fellows annually by 2035, with future expansion targets including primary care, orthopedics, and transplant medicine.
