AI and Black Friday Trends Define eCommerce Expo 2026

At the Technology for Marketing and eCommerce Expo held last week at ExCeL London, industry leaders grappled with the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence in retail. The two-day event centered on balancing predictive personalization with consumer trust, while preparing for a Black Friday season that starts earlier than ever.

Sharon Gai, CEO of Culture Fluid, set the tone by challenging the industry to move beyond reactive search-based shopping. She argued that the next phase of commerce relies on predicting customer needs before a search query is even typed, though she cautioned that retailers must navigate the delicate boundary between helpful automation and invasive data usage. This concern regarding the limits of machine autonomy was echoed by Klaas van Raaij of Incard Netherlands, who advised businesses to view AI as a tool requiring a career path rather than a replacement for human oversight.

Beyond data governance, the event highlighted the rise of discovery-led commerce. Representatives from TikTok and Social United detailed how entertainment-first platforms are successfully funneling users into sales, with brands now urged to prioritize discoverability over traditional follower counts. This push for integrated strategies extended to retail media, where experts like Henkel’s Mike Hyman and ISBA’s Clare O'Brien pushed for an end to the silos between performance marketing and long-term brand building.

Preparing for the upcoming peak trading season, IMRG data indicated that Black Friday momentum is accelerating, with 21% of retailers planning promotions by early November. The conference concluded with insights from former England Lionesses Millie Bright and Ellen White, who drew parallels between high-stakes sports management and the corporate necessity of fostering shared accountability and clear culture within retail teams.
