Juan-Diego Estrada Translates School Wellness into New Book

After two decades of embedding mindfulness into the classroom, Dr. Juan-Diego Estrada, Director of Wellness at The John Cooper School, has released his debut book, Beyond Thinking. Published by Bloomsbury Academic, the work codifies the school’s systemic approach to student and faculty health, known as Wisdom in Action.

The text serves as a practical guide for educators, bridging the gap between neuroscience and daily classroom management. Estrada argues that if schools are to foster genuine student flourishing, the change must begin with the adults who lead them. By identifying unhelpful behavioral patterns and applying mindfulness techniques, he outlines how teachers can move beyond traditional academic instruction to build more intentional learning environments.

Much of the book’s framework is rooted in the collaborative work Estrada has conducted alongside Head of School Dr. Stephen Popp. Their joint efforts in The Woodlands have long emphasized that intellectual growth is inseparable from social and emotional development. Dr. Popp notes that the book effectively exports the culture of their campus to a wider audience, offering a blueprint for institutions seeking to prioritize character development alongside academic rigor. The publication has already drawn endorsements from experts, including Marc Brackett of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
