The Rise of the Professional Reseller

The Rise of the Professional Reseller

Selling secondhand clothes has evolved from a casual side hustle into a primary career for a growing number of entrepreneurs. New data from the AI-powered marketplace Fleek reveals that 28% of resellers now operate full-time, with many others actively scaling their operations to replace traditional employment.

The transition to professional reselling often correlates with experience. While only 14% of those active for less than six months rely on the trade for a full-time income, that figure jumps to 53% for veterans with over five years of experience. For these professionals, the business model is shifting away from occasional thrift store finds toward a demand for reliable inventory and data-driven insights. Vinted currently stands as the most lucrative platform, with 65% of sellers identifying it as their primary revenue source.

Live selling has emerged as a vital tool for these businesses, adopted by nearly half of full-time sellers to bypass the labor-intensive process of photographing and listing individual items. This professionalization is also reshaping inventory strategies. While Ralph Lauren remains the most in-demand brand, the market is seeing a massive surge in Y2K-era labels like American Eagle and Hollister. Conversely, consumer interest in pandemic-era staples like hoodies and track jackets is waning, replaced by a demand for bootcut jeans and printed blouses.
