Smallwood, a Grammy-nominated pianist and choir director who passed away in December 2025 at 77, bridged the gap between classical composition and traditional Black gospel. His catalog, featuring staples like "Total Praise" and "Center of My Joy," transcended church walls to find a home in the repertoires of artists ranging from Whitney Houston to Destiny's Child.
Leading the production is Bill Moss Jr., whose own deep roots in the city's gospel scene inform this celebration of Smallwood’s national impact. Joining him are vocal director Pam English, pianist Alvin Waddles, artistic director Rev. Kimberly Whitsett, and band director Ernest Tolbert. Together, they will stage 15 of Smallwood's most iconic compositions. For Moss, the event serves as a love letter to a musician who fundamentally reshaped the language of worship. Tickets are currently available for $30 in advance or $40 at the door, with VIP options priced at $75.
