In a March Instagram post, Gerber shared a video taken just before undergoing an "ibogaine flood dose," a treatment he described with raw vulnerability. He admitted to being terrified, noting that surrendering control was a significant hurdle in his pursuit of stability. Despite the fear, he expressed hope that the experience would mark a permanent shift in his life, writing, "I’m praying it’s the last time I have to come back."
His family rallied behind him in the comments section, reflecting the years of support they had provided during his battle with opioid addiction. Cindy Crawford praised his resilience, calling him a "warrior" who had "walked thru the fire to find yourself." Rande Gerber similarly commended his son’s courage, while Kaia Gerber shared her pride in his determination.
This public openness was a cornerstone of Gerber’s later years. After surviving a near-fatal fentanyl overdose that left him in a coma, he sought to destigmatize the conversation around mental health and substance abuse. In 2023, he told the Studio 22 podcast that his goal was to help others avoid the darkness he had navigated. His journey remained complex, however; in December 2025, he revealed frustration with the medical establishment, noting that consulting over 15 psychiatrists had left him struggling with a cocktail of medications rather than a clear path forward. He ultimately turned toward lifestyle changes, including sobriety and exercise, hoping his candidness would remind others that they were not alone in their struggles.
