Sainsbury's Taps Accenture Veteran for Food Transformation Role

William McGrath has joined Sainsbury’s as the new Head of Food WMS Transformation, stepping into the role after a thirteen-year tenure at Accenture. His appointment comes as the supermarket chain faces scrutiny over the deployment of facial recognition technology across its retail estate.

McGrath, who previously served as a Senior Manager at Accenture, joins the retailer at a period of significant operational transition. His focus will center on warehouse management systems and food transformation, key components in the company’s ongoing efforts to modernize its supply chain and logistics infrastructure.

Simultaneously, the retailer is navigating public controversy regarding its use of Facewatch facial recognition systems. Plans to expand this technology to approximately 200 stores by 2026 have drawn criticism following an incident in East Dulwich, where a customer, Matt Arnold, was incorrectly identified as a shoplifter. Sainsbury’s attributed the error to staff mismanagement rather than a technical failure of the software, asserting that the system maintains a 99.98% accuracy rate. Facewatch corroborated this account, stating that the alert sent to store management was correct, but subsequent human handling resulted in the customer being wrongly escorted from the premises.
