Sheeran’s performance arrived after a week of intense scrutiny over the decision to drop Macklemore from the tour. In solidarity with the rapper, Sheeran’s scheduled opening acts—including Finneas, Aaron Rowe, and Luke Graham—along with his backing band Beoga, withdrew from the Philadelphia date.

Addressing the crowd, Sheeran admitted he was unsure if he would perform at all. He characterized the events as a clash between his desire to keep concerts as "safe spaces" and the pressure of complex political discourse. While stating he prefers to avoid the role of a political commentator, he labeled the violence in Gaza as "catastrophic and unjustifiable." He also acknowledged the "horrific" nature of the October 7 attacks in Israel, framing the situation as a humanitarian crisis that demands attention. As he continues the Loop Tour, Sheeran announced he is seeking ways to contribute to relief efforts, noting that he is currently "listening and learning" to better understand how to support victims on both sides of the conflict.
