AI Agents Are Making Unsupervised Product Decisions, Warns Info-Tech

As IT departments transition from project-based models to continuous product ownership, the integration of autonomous agents introduces significant risk. Hans Eckman, a research fellow at Info-Tech, emphasizes that while projects provide the funding for change, product ownership is what preserves accountability. In environments where AI agents participate in discovery, prioritization, and delivery, this accountability is often slipping through the cracks.

"Teams need to know what an agent is authorized to do, when a human needs to intervene, and who remains accountable for the result," Eckman stated. The research firm warns of "silent delegation," where AI-driven recommendations occur behind the scenes, effectively bypassing human review. To counter this, Info-Tech’s new blueprint urges leaders to map every decision point where an agent interacts with a workflow. This process requires explicitly defining whether an agent is a product component or a delivery mechanism, and establishing clear override paths for every automated action.
